Maplewood’s owners Roger and Pat have been inducted into The Wisconsin Meat Industry Hall of Fame.  Thanks to their hard work and dedication to quality, the Green Bay firm has received 152 state cured meat product competition awards from the Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors, 51 national cured meat product competition awards from the American Association of Meat Processors and 5 international competition awards in Germany. The couple has also hosted numerous food safety seminars in their plant in an effort to help maintain the state’s meat industry reputation for high-quality products.

MAPLEWOOD MEATS is owned and operated by the Van*Hemelryk family -- Roger and Patricia, daughter Lisa and son-in-law Bob, son David and daughter-in-law Vicki, and grandchildren: Kasey, Kevin, Megan, Matthew, Brad, Sara, and Cari.

A brief history of Maplewood's beginnings from Roger & Pat: "Roger worked at Armour & Co. in Green Bay until it closed in 1980.  We decided then to pursue opening our own business.  My father was a butcher, and with Roger's experience from Armour, the meat business was a natural choice.

We discovered that there was a need for quality custom processing for the local farmers. We purchased a parcel of vacant farmland at the intersection of Highway 29-32 and County VV, 5 miles West of Green Bay.  In June of 1983 we broke ground for our new building.  Maplewood opened its doors for business on November 17, 1983.

As a side line, we installed a ten foot meat case and offered fresh cuts of beef, pork, and a variety of sausages. Even though we relied on only word of mouth to let people know about Maplewood, the business grew.  In 1986, we needed to expand and built an addition.  This addition encompassed our "Old Fashioned" meat market theme.  A large oak cooler with marble inlays, dating back to the early 1900s, covers one wall.  In 1993, and again in 2000, we added additional space to our business.

The latest addition was completed in 2001.  We now offer fresh and smoked meats and sausages in over 80 feet of full-service case, as well as in our convenience coolers & freezers.  In addition to meats, our retail area includes Wisconsin cheeses, a variety of jams and jellies, pickled vegetables, maple syrup, and coffee beans and better wines.  The "Old Fashioned" theme continues and portrays our business philosophy of quality products at fair prices.  Our full-service cases are serviced by our friendly and knowledgeable staff." ---Pat
